WIND is committed to disaster recovery funding to assist those in financial need following devastating natural disasters. Since 2004, WIND has contributed more than $455,000 to disaster recovery and relief efforts.

October 2024

WIND Donates $55,000 to for Hurricane Relief

In late September 2024, Hurricane Helene caused widespread destruction and fatalities across the Southeastern U.S. The storm caused catastrophic rainfall-triggered flooding, particularly in western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee. It was the strongest hurricane on record to strike the Big Bend region of Florida, the deadliest for the U.S. since 2017, and the deadliest in mainland U.S. since 2005.

WIND made a contribution of $12,500 each  to World Central Kitchen and Mountain Projects’ Emergency Fund.

In October, 2024, Hurricane Milton became the second-most intense Atlantic hurricane ever recorded over the Gulf of Mexico (behind 2005’s Hurricane Rita). Less than two weeks after Hurricane Helene’s devastation, Milton made landfall on the west coast of Florida, generating deadly tornados and causing flooding.

WIND provided $10,000 to the American Red Cross North Florida Region, $5,000 to the American Red Cross Georgia Region, $10,000 to Project Hope, and $5,000 to Feeding Georgia.

May 2024

WIND Donates $50,000 for Storm Relief

From the evening of May 16, 2024, to midday May 17, 2024, a derecho struck the Gulf Coast, affecting Southeast Texas to the Florida panhandle. The storm brought winds up to 100 miles per hour, along with four tornadoes, causing widespread damage, particularly in Houston and the surrounding areas.

WIND provided $17,500 each to the American Red Cross Gulf Coast Region and Houston Food Bank, $12,500 to the American Red Cross North Florida Region, and $2,500 to Florida State University’s Tallahassee campus Student Emergency Fund.

August 2023

WIND Donates $25,000 to for Lahaina Wildfire Relief

In early August 2023, a series of wildfires broke out in Hawaii, predominantly on the island of Maui. The wind-driven fires, fanned by wind gusts topping 60 mph, prompted evacuations, and caused widespread damage, killing at least 115 people, leaving 388 others missing, destroying more than 2,000 structures in the town of Lahaina.

WIND made a contribution of $20,000 to the Hawai‘i Community Foundation’s Maui Strong Fund, and $5,000 to the Hawaii Animal Rescue Foundation’s Fire Relief Fund.

December 2022

WIND Donates $60,000 for Hurricane Relief

In September 2022, Hurricane Ian, a Category 4 storm, made landfall on Florida’s west coast, and then slowly moved across the Florida peninsula, hammering the state with heavy rains and powerful winds, causing catastrophic flooding and power outages. Barrier islands were disconnected from the mainland when the Sanibel Causeway was destroyed. Ian was Florida’s deadliest hurricane since 1935 and could also be the costliest in terms of property damage.

In November 2022, Hurricane Nicole devastated parts of Florida’s east coast and caused severe beach erosion. The rare November storm caused significant flooding in central Florida.

WIND provided $20,000 each to Rebuilding Together, Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida, and Harry Chapin Food Bank, with funds earmarked to support hurricane relief efforts.

December 2021

WIND Donates $5,000 to Team Kentucky for Tornado Relief

On December 10, 2021, a storm system moving across the central United States resulted in widespread severe weather across the region, including tornadoes. The National Weather Service reported EF-4 and EF-3 tornados. An EF-4 had peak winds of 190 mph, a path of 165.7 miles, and was over a mile wide at times. WIND made a contribution of $5,000 to support the relief efforts.

Fall 2021

WIND Donates $10,000 for Hurricane Ida Relief

Hurricane Ida was designated as such on August 27, 2021, and made landfall first in Cuba and then along the southeastern coast of Louisiana on August 29, as a category 3. The storm continued to Southern Mississippi and weakened to a tropical depression on August 30. The damage from wind and storm surge and flooding impacted families across the Gulf Coast. To support those affected by Ida, WIND contributed $5,000 to both Prodisee Pantry and The Salvation Army, Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi Divisional Headquarters.

March 2020

WIND Donates $25,000 to Salvation Army for Nashville, Tennessee area Tornado Relief

In March 2020, people in Nashville, Tennessee and surrounding communities were devastated by multiple tornadoes. The Windstorm Insurance Network Board of Directors, on behalf of the organization’s membership, presented a designated gift of $25,000 to the Salvation Army Nashville for disaster relief efforts.

October 2018

WIND Donates $5,000 for Hurricane Michael Relief

Two months after the Florida Panhandle was impacted by near category 5 Hurricane Michael, WIND presented the Northwest Florida Chapter of the American Red Cross with a $5,000 check for disaster relief efforts.

As an organization, WIND matches members’ donations up to $15,000 for disaster relief for the Moore, OK tornado. Donations sent to the American Red Cross local Oklahoma chapter.

2012

WIND Scholarship at FSU

Qualified graduate and undergraduate students majoring in Risk Management are eligible to apply for the scholarship. WIND members with qualified dependents are asked to apply as well, as additional preference is also given to students affiliated with WIND. To qualify an eligible student must have a 2.5 GPA or above and must be in good standing with the College of Business. Consideration is also given to applicants with financial need, especially greater consideration will be given to scholarship, leadership, character and community service.

Summer 2012: WIND is again pleased to continue to fund our Windstorm Insurance Network, Inc. Scholarship Fund at FSU’s College of Business / Risk Management. Our recent $5,000 donation will fund scholarships for qualified graduate and undergraduate students majoring in Risk Management.

WIND Donates $25,000 to Tuscaloosa Chapters of the Salvation Army and American Red Cross for Alabama Tornado Disaster Relief

The Windstorm Insurance Network, Inc. (www.windnetwork.com) donated $25,000 to the Tuscaloosa, Alabama Chapter of the Salvation Army and West Alabama/Tuscaloosa Chapter of the American Red Cross to support disaster relief efforts in the aftermath of the devastating and fatal tornados that hit the area on April 27, 2011.
