WIND Funds Legacy Endowment Scholarship at FSU

The Windstorm Insurance Network (WIND), a professional education association for property insurance claims professionals, recently funded an endowment scholarship at Florida State University’s College of Business/Department of Risk Management/Insurance (“RMI”).

The fund will award $5K annually to FSU students pursuing a career in the risk management/insurance field. The Windstorm Insurance Network Legacy Endowment Fund ensures that a permanent $5K scholarship will be given annually to a deserving undergraduate or graduate student.

“The Windstorm Insurance Network Endowment Scholarship Fund is one of the largest awarded by the department. The size of the scholarship will allow students to reduce their loans or cut back on work hours so they are able to focus more on their studies and be more involved in department, college, and universities activities,” said Dr. Cassandra Cole, RMI department chair.

WIND has a strong mission for education for future insurance professionals. Since 2009, WIND has funded scholarships for the insurance risk management school at FSU with the goal of ultimately creating a legacy for WIND with an endowed scholarship.

The scholarship assists applicants with financial need; however, greater consideration will be given to scholarship, leadership, character and community service with preference to be given to dependents of members of WIND. All recipients will be asked to write to WIND acknowledging the award. Scholarships are typically funded in late fall for the Spring semester.

“This endowment is consistent with the goals espoused by our organization and generates interest in the insurance profession among students. We hope to team the endowment with potential mentoring and internships with these students and our members. Our industry is becoming more and more silver and we need to educate and encourage the next generation of insurance professionals,” said attorney Janet L. Brown, whose firm played an instrumental role in the formation of WIND. Former WIND president Susan B. Harwood also commends WIND’s Board of Directors and membership for “their generosity and support of deserving students.”

The Windstorm Insurance Network was founded in 1999 to offer education and industry insight to representatives from all facets of the property/windstorm insurance claims industry. Its mission is to promote a cooperative dialogue among defense and policyholder property/windstorm insurance claims professionals.
